Philosophy Statement

As a teacher, I am tasked to provide students with life-changing experiences--musically, educationally, and socially. In addition to offering valuable musical and performance training, band teaches students to deal with life situations in both the musical and “real” world. As students develop attributes such as dedication, discipline, problem-solving abilities, and teamwork, they also gain confidence, quality of character, and a strong work ethic. Furthermore, the hard work and perseverance that are required to be successful in band have direct applications in the professional world. If I can teach kids to be musical, creative, hardworking individuals who can function successfully in society, a thriving and musical band program will naturally and quickly follow suit. Getting to mentor individual students and watch them develop into successful young adults is incredibly rewarding. This is the reason I teach and will always be the highest goal of my professional teaching career.

As an effective leader, I will take my classroom and band director experience to aid teachers in their craft, promote teamwork, collaboration, and horizontal and vertical alignment between subject teachers and schools, champion the idea that every student, regardless of background, is capable of success, and cultivate an inclusive school culture that focuses on equity initiatives to reduce the achievement gap.
